Itinerary
Day 1 (Travel To France):
Let’s travel to Nantes. At the airport let’s meet our friendly local representative, before travelling onwards to our hotel in Saumur.
Day 2 (Saumur):
Today let’s discover the charm of Saumur on a guided walking tour through its picturesque streets and historic landmarks. We begin by exploring the old town, with its half-timbered houses, quaint squares, and vibrant atmosphere. Our guide will share stories of the city’s rich history, from its medieval origins to its role in the Loire Valley’s wine culture. The highlight of the morning will be the visit to the magnificent Château de Saumur, perched on a hill overlooking the Loire River. Marvel at the castle’s stunning architecture, which blends medieval and Renaissance styles, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
You will have the afternoon at leisure to relax at the hotel or explore more of the city at your own pace, wandering through the charming old town, where cobblestone streets lead to artisan shops, inviting cafes, and vibrant markets.
Day 3 (Chenonceau & Tours):
This morning, we will experience the elegance and history of the Château de Chenonceau, one of the most iconic castles in the Loire Valley, with a self-paced audio-guided tour. Known as the “Castle of the Ladies,” this magnificent Renaissance masterpiece stretches gracefully over the Cher River. The audio guide provides fascinating insights into the castle’s rich history, including stories of its influential residents like Catherine de’ Medici and Diane de Poitiers. We stroll through opulent rooms adorned with period furnishings and exquisite tapestries and admire the breathtaking views of the river from the castle’s iconic gallery. We end our visit by wandering the beautifully landscaped gardens, which reflect the artistry and refinement of the château’s past.
This afternoon you can spend some free time in Tours, the vibrant gateway to the Loire Valley. You can stroll through the picturesque Place Plumereau, known for its half-timbered houses, lively cafes, and charming atmosphere. This square is perfect for enjoying a coffee or a glass of Loire Valley wine while soaking up the local ambience. immerse yourself in the region’s gastronomy by sampling regional specialities like rillettes and goat cheese at a market or restaurant. You can also visit the stunning Saint-Gatien Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture with intricate stained-glass windows. Art lovers can explore the Musée des Beaux-Arts, housing an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures set in a former bishop’s palace.
Day 4 (At Leisure):
Today is a free day, for relaxing or independent sightseeing. For a scenic escape, take a stroll to explore the Loire Riverbanks, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering picturesque views and tranquil picnic spots. Alternatively, immerse yourself in Saumur’s equestrian heritage by attending a performance or visiting the National Riding School, famous for its classical horsemanship displays.
Day 5 (Boat Trip To Loire River):
This morning, we explore more with an original outing that combines a boat trip and a visit to a Saumur Brut cellar. We begin with a serene boat trip along the Loire River, where we will glide past picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and historic landmarks, all while learning about the region’s rich history and natural heritage. After our river journey, we delve into the world of sparkling wine with a guided visit to a Saumur Brut cellar, as the boat drops us off at the foot of the caves on the Thouet. We discover the art of traditional winemaking, explore the underground caves where the wines are aged, and enjoy a tasting session to savour the crisp and refined flavours of this regional specialty.
The afternoon is yours to rest and relax. Or to enjoy more of French wines.
Day 6 (At Leisure):
Today is another day free to relax and take in some further sightseeing. Our expert local guide will be happy to suggest activities and advise on must-see highlights. For example, you can take a short train ride to Angers to marvel at its castle, home to the incredible Apocalypse Tapestry, or visit the vibrant city centre with its lively markets and cafes.
Day 7 (Chambord & Blois):
Today we’ll explore more, as we immerse ourselves in the grandeur of the Château de Chambord, a true masterpiece of the French Renaissance and one of the Loire Valley’s most iconic landmarks. On this guided tour, we will uncover the fascinating history of this architectural marvel, conceived by King Francis I and inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s genius. We explore the castle’s stunning interiors, including the famous double-helix staircase, grand halls, and ornately decorated chambers. Our guide will share captivating stories of royal intrigue, architectural innovation, and the château’s role in French history.
This afternoon you can spend some free time in Blois, nestled along the Loire River. Take a stroll through the historic centre, where narrow cobblestone streets lead to charming squares, boutiques, and cafes. You can visit the Maison de la Magie (House of Magic), a unique museum celebrating the art of illusion and magician Robert-Houdin, perfect for all ages. You can also admire the magnificent Château de Blois, known for its stunning architecture spanning multiple styles and its intriguing royal history.
Day 8 (Return Home):
Time has come to say good-bye to the Loire Valley and fly back home as we travel with guide assistance to Nantes airport.
