Enjoy a short river cruise break on the Danube and discover some of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe with us on this 5-night solo traveller holiday. Before embarking on the 4 star MS Maxima to commence our Danube river cruise, we’ll start our journey in Munich with a guided city tour to explore this beautiful Bavarian capital. On the first night of our river cruise, we’ll have a welcome drink and dinner reception so we can get to get to know our fellow travellers. As we cruise down Europe’s longest waterway, we’ll savour the amazing views and stop off at world-famous landmarks and cities along the way. Our ports of call with half-day guided city tours will be led by expert local guides who will share their wealth of knowledge and take us to the highlights of each destination, which include Vienna, Budapest, Bratislava, and Melk. There will also be free time to sightsee independently or with your fellow travellers. In addition to plenty of sightseeing and guided activities, this holiday also offers ample leisure time for us to relax onboard the ship.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Travel To Germany):

Upon arrival in Munich, we will be met by our local guide who will assist us in the transfer to Passau port with a guided Passau city tour en-route. Let’s discover the beauty of this elegant German city. Created by Italian baroque masters in the 17th century, it is filled with soaring towers, picturesque places, enchanting promenades, and romantic lanes. Let’s take in highlights such as St. Stephens’s Cathedral, in which the world’s largest cathedral organ sounds, the majestic fortress Veste Oberhaus on the Daube’s side and the Pilgrimage Church “Mariahilf” on the Inn’s side.

In the afternoon we will be transferred to Passau port to join our River Cruise. Settle into our cabin and explore the range of facilities on board our ship as we embark on our 5-night cruise along the Daube. Sit back with a welcome cocktail in one of the lounge areas, followed by a tasty welcome dinner.

Day 2 (Explore Vienna):

This afternoon, after spending the morning cruising along the Danube, we will embark on an included city tour of Vienna. This tour will give us an overall impression of the most important sights Vienna has to offer. First we will drive along the famous Ringstrasse, passing several magnificent buildings like the stunning opera house, the parliament, the Court Theatre and Vienna’s imposing city hall. The tour is followed by a guided walk through the city centre where we will get to know Vienna at its finest. We will start at the well-known Hofburg Imperial Palace, walk along the Kohl market and finish at Vienna’s iconic St. Stephens’s Cathedral. Before returning to the ship we will have some free time to explore at your own pace.

After we return to our ship in the late afternoon we set sail towards Budapest.

Day 3 (Budapest):

After docking into Budapest port after lunch, we will be escorted on an included guided tour of the historic centre. Take in highlights such as Heroes Square, the Synagogue and the Castle District. Walk by the Ottoman styled St Mathias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion for photo opportunities, and visit St Stephan’s Basilica.

We will have the rest of the day at leisure to further explore this fascinating city at our own pace of partake in the optional ‘Budapest by Night’ excursion (payable locally):

Day 4 (Bratislava):

We will arrive in Bratislava in the early afternoon. The city is small and best explored on foot. Following breakfast, lets enjoy a walking tour of this compact city. During this tour we will get to know the capital of the young Slovakian Republic. The gorgeous old town has maintained its Gothic-Baroque style. The tour passes St. Martin’s Cathedral a former coronation cathedral for Hungarian kings and the Grassalkovich Palace and continues up the hill, where you will have a stunning, panoramic view of the city and surrounding areas. Afterwards, we will have some free time to explore this compact city, take a stroll through the restored old town, visit Michael’s Gate, and admire sights such as the main square with the old City Hall, the Opera House, and Maximilian Fountain.

Day 5 (Melk):

Today we will wake up in Melk where we can enjoy an optional excursion to Melk Abbey (payable locally). Melk Abbey is an Austrian Benedictine abbey and one of the world’s most famous monastic sites. The impressive Baroque abbey was built between 1702 and 1736 and is the biggest monastery complex of the Austrian baroque period. The Abbey’s church features frescos by Johanna Michael Rottmayr and the impressive library contains countless medieval manuscripts and frescos by Paul Troger. A guided tour makes us through the abbot’s chambers, along the Imperator’s walk, through the marble hall, the balconies, and the library.

Day 6 (Munich & Return Home):

This morning we will disembark the ship after breakfast. We will be met by our local representative and enjoy a city tour of Munich. Highlights include the Nymphenburg Palace, King’s Square with its three temple buildings in the classical Greek style, the Bavarian National Museum, and the Angel of Peace monument, the elegant buildings and shops along Maximilian Street, the Maximilianeum, the National Opera House, the Royal Palace, Stachus Square, and the medieval city gates.

After some free time for lunch or shopping in Munich, we will be transferred to Munich airport for our flight home, with guide assistance.

Please Note: For the 4th August departure following the Munich city tour we will be transferred to our hotel Maritim Hotel Munchen for one night stay on B&B basis and the following morning we will be transferred to our Munich airport for our return flight home.
